LUIS & YAZZ WIN AGAIN

Luis (Pastel de Bacalhau de Viamonte at Zenabraao) and Yazz (Neblina do Vale de Fermedo at Zenabraao) went to Douai, France to take part in the Club Saint Hubert du Nord's Exposition Canine Nationale (13th July) and Internationale (14th July). As before, they managed the same results in each day winning the highest possible awards:

Luis: rated 'Excellent' and awarded Best of Breed with a CAC (Nationale show) and a CACIB (Internationale show).

Yazz: rated 'Excellent' and awarded Best Junior and Best Opposite Sex with a Junior CAC (Nationale show) and a Junior CACIB (Internationale show).

Fizz took the first step on the Kennel Club Good Citizens scheme by passing her Puppy Foundation Assessment. The next step is Bronze and then onwards...

Luis has sired another litter. This one was with Simon & Anna Sampson's Oti (Morialta Sesmarias). There were two puppies in the litter: a girl (white with a brown head & big spot) and a boy (fawn & white). Puppies and mum are doing fine. We'll update Luis' page as names etc are confirmed.

Luis (Pastel de Bacalhau de Viamonte at Zenabraao) and Yazz (Neblina do Vale de Fermedo at Zenabraao) made their first trip to a continental show with appearances at two shows in Gent, Belgium on 11 and 12 May - the 55e and 56e Flanders Dog Show. They got the same result each day:

Luis: rated 'Excellent' and awarded Best of Breed with a CACIB and a CAC.

Yazz: rated 'Excellent' and awarded Best Junior and Best Opposite Sex with a Junior CACIB.

We couldn't be prouder!

Yazz has started her 'Good Citizens' scheme journey with a very assured performance to pass her Bronze test. With Luis and Effy having reached Gold, she is now hot on their heels and loving the time at training class.

Yazz (Neblina do Vale de Fermedo at Zenabraao) was Second in the Puppy Bitch class at Crufts 2024. It was only her second ever show and while she was a little nervous, she put in a very credible performance that some folks thought deserved first place... She's picture opposite practicing before going into the ring.

Meanwhile, Luis had a disappointing day. In a big class, the judge decided to dismiss all the smooths and only took a detailed look at the wire-haired dogs.

Effy has emulated her kennel-mate Luis and successfully passed the 'Good Citizens' Gold test. She's pictured here with her proud handler and flanked by her pals Huckleberry the lab and Bijou. Quite a lot of the test is done outdoors and it was tricky for all the dogs as it was raining quite hard and we all got rather wet. However, the little superstar coped admirably and did everything very well, albeit she needed telling twice on the 'Bed' command - not her favourite!

Luis won Best Dog at Leeds, being pipped in the Challenge - again! - by Sue Brundle's Treacle (Brundledean Giovana) and so having to settle for Best Opposite Sex.

The show was notable for a couple of other Luis-related successes. His daughter Teacake (Stormwitch Givenchy) was first in Post Graduate Bitch while a more recent daughter Noodle (Stormwitch Magic Melody) made her show debut at 6 months and a few days old and absolutely stormed it. She won Best Puppy in Breed and Reserve Best Bitch - quite a start to her showing career!

Luis has successfully passed the 'Good Citizens' Gold test - and we think that in doing so he has become the first Portuguese Podengo to get this award. Whatever, it's a fantastic achievement and we're very, very proud of the young man.

Effy took her 'Good Citizens' Silver test today and passed with flying colours - the examiner said her conduct was "excellent." She was even asked to do the 2 minute stay a second time because - having done it faultlessly the first time - a second dog was needed to sit with a dog that had failed this part of the test first time around. And she did it faultlessly a second time!  We'll have to think about going for Gold now...

Luis was entered in Limit Dog and won this class with a very good performance. He went into the Dog Challenge full of confidence and deservedly won Best Dog. However, he couldn't keep it up and didn't go so well well when it came to the Challenge. Well done, then, to Sue Brundle with Brundledean Giovana ('Treacle') who took Best of Breed.

June 2023

Luis is 4 now so we felt - especially after doing so well in 2022 - it was time to put him in with the 'big boys' in Open Dog. He took 3rd place and did well. Ann was highly complimented by some watching Portuguese spectators who noted how Luis was free standing and was on a loose lead i.e. not the tight upwards hold of many Podengo exhibitors.

3rd place gives him an exemption for next year's show but we'll continue to campaign him and work further on his ringcraft. Go Luis!

Effy took her 'Good Citizens' Bronze test today and passed with flying colours: she'll soon be catching up Luis on Silver! And talking of Silver, Tink - who passed Bronze at the same testing day as Luis got his Silver - has now passed Silver as well. Well done Effy and Tink.

Dec. 2022

Luis showed his little socks off at Crufts 2022 and was rewarded with first place in Post Graduate Dog at Crufts 2022. It was one of his best ever performances: he stood well, walked well and looked every inch the part. We were a little disappointed in the Dog Challenge where he ought to have got Reserve Best Dog but was pipped to it by a former BoB. Next year...

Gabby also did well. Lack of showing during the pandemic meant she was a bit rusty and nervous but she never the less came away with Very Highly Commended (5th) in what was the biggest class of the day, so not too bad.

And a mention, too, for Luis' daughter Teacake (Stormwitch Givenchy) as she took 2nd place in Junior Bitch - well done TC!

We had a decent day at the Ladies Kennel Association show at the NEC this year: Pastel De Bacalhau De Viamonte @ Zenabraao (Luis) 1st in his class; Plushcourt Gable @ Zenabraao (Gabby) 2nd in hers.

Luis and his daughter Teacake (Stormwitch Givenchy) met up again in May 2021 after Teacake had been to a ringcraft lesson in a hall near us. TC (as she’s known) is now 7.5 months and turning into a very nice looking podengo. She got on famously with all the Zenabraao crowd, who were delighted to see her and spent a fun afternoon running themselves silly in the garden. Let's hope they can do it again soon!

In August, Luis was mated with Tink, known to the dog world as MULTI CH Stormwitch Carrousel Tulpe WW’18. On 7th October 2020, she successfully delivered a litter of three puppies - two bitches and one dog.

Tink is one of the most successful Podengos in the country, possibly the most. After announcing herself by winning Best Puppy in Breed at Crufts 2015, where she was also Reserve Best Bitch, she went on to become a Champion in Germany, Belgium, Benelux and the Netherlands. Her win at the World Dog Show in 2018 added World Winner to her titles and in 2019 she won Best of Breed at Crufts. This and her wins at other Championship Shows in 2019 saw her winning the annual ‘Our Dogs’ award for top performer in the breed.

Luis is at the start of his career. He was twice Best Puppy in Breed at Championship Shows and won a further two at Opens. He was Best Puppy in Show at NPPA 2019 and then, as a junior, won a Best Dog and a Reserve Best Dog at Championship Shows. He’ll compete as an adult when showing resumes.

Luis took 2nd place in the Junior Dog class at Crufts 2020, a result that gives him an exemption into Crufts 2021.

He was a bit nervous on the table and he walked very well. The judge, however, said it was a tight call between him and the class winner but he felt Luis' ears weren't upright enough when he walked - so 2nd place it was.
